WhatsApp is testing a feature that would allow an iPhone user to transfer chats to a second iPhone without engaging Apple’s iCloud service.
WHATSAPP regularly gains limelight for experimenting with new features within its app across platforms. In that series, the latest tinkering that the Meta-owned platform is testing is a feature that will allow an iPhone user to transfer chats to a second iPhone without engaging Apple’s iCloud service. The feature is live for some beta testers, as per WABetaInfo.
The platform tracker added that WhatsApp is rolling out the feature on iOS 23.9.0.72 via the TestFlight beta program. In this build, the functionality is available for “some” testers and is expected to roll out to more users in the coming weeks.
Transfer Chats to iPhone
In the screengrab shared by the platform, a new option is available that reads, “Transfer Chats to iPhone” within the Chats settings of WhatsApp. After tapping on the option, the description of the Move Chats menu claims that a user can transfer their chat history “privately” to stay updated on the context of chats without using Apple’s iCloud service. To stir the functionality into action, “certain device permissions” would be required to establish a connection with the other device.
How to transfer chats via “Transfer Chats” on iPhone?
A beta user would have to install WhatsApp on the second iPhone, login via the phone number and use the primary device to scan the Quick Response (QR) code displayed on the new device to migrate chat data.
Benefits of Transfer Chats to iPhone
It would prove helpful for users with a large WhatsApp backup and who use iCloud’s free 5GB storage plan. The update would solve the problem of storage crunch for those users besides freeing up memory.
Meanwhile, the WhatsApp enthusiast earlier reported that the app is also testing a similar feature on Android via Google Drive. It aims to end the reliance on the cloud service to transfer chats across Android devices. The beta version marked as 2.23.9.19 turned out to be an eligible build to test the feature for some beta users.
