WhatsApp rolling out ability to send HD photos on iOS and Android

WhatsApp is testing a new feature that lets users choose if they want to share images in standard or high resolution. Here’s how it works.

WhatsApp is one of the few apps that is constantly updated with new features. Now, the Meta-owned platform seems to be testing another feature that lets users share photos with their friends and family in high definition.

According to a recent report by WABetaInfo, the latest beta version of WhatsApp for both iOS and Android introduced a new HD photo quality option when sending photos to others. WhatsApp automatically compresses the image when users share it on the platform, but with the new feature, it will be possible to send photos in high resolution.

While the new functionality preserves image dimensions, light compression is still applied and the photos are not sent in the original resolution. Another thing to note here is that when you share a photo, the default option will always be set to ‘Standard quality’ and you will have to click on the HD button to send the image in high resolution.

WhatsApp also adds a new tag to the message bubble, which helps the recipient figure out when a photo is sent using the feature. Currently, the ability to send HD photos is limited to images shared within conversations. Available on WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.12.13 and WhatsApp beta for iOS 23.11.0.76, the developers seem to be gradually rolling out the new feature, so it might take some time before it is available on your device.
