Meta-owned instant messaging platform WhatsApp recently rolled out the Channels feature for users in multiple countries across the world. The feature has gained traction as it allows WhatsApp users to stay in touch with celebrities and other known people. For example, PM Narendra Modi’s WhatsApp channel received millions of subscribers within a week. Now, the company is developing another new feature for users to manage the Channels.
According to a report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp has rolled out a new update through the Google Play Beta Program for Android users. The latest update shows that the company is working on a new way to manage Channels. With this feature, users will be able to automatically remove channel media from the device. This feature is expected to be available in a future update of the app.
WhatsApp channel auto deletion feature: How it will work
The report includes a screenshot that explains how the feature will work. When this feature becomes available, there will be a new section called “Channel Settings” where users can choose when images and videos shared within channels have to be automatically removed from the device.
Currently, WhatsApp cannot immediately delete channel media from the user device as the default option is set to “Never”. This can cause users to pile on a huge amount of channel media on their devices over time and may lead to storage issues.
However, it’s important to note that this screenshot also shows a white top app bar inside this section. This further confirms that the white top app bar will be available in any section of the app.
With the introduction of this feature, WhatsApp will offer users greater control over how long a media remains on their device. This will also enhance their overall WhatsApp experience as users will no longer need to manually manage their channel media to free up storage space on their devices. The automatic option is expected to arrive with a future update.
It’s also important to note that the deleted media will be downloaded once the user opens the channel again. Moreover, it seems that this will be an individual setting that will allow users to disable it for one channel while keeping it active for another.
