On Sunday, WhatsApp, an instant messaging platform, announced that it had taken action against over 6.5 million problematic accounts in India during the month of May.
According to a report by Zee News, this action was in accordance with the new IT Rules 2021. Out of the total banned accounts, 2.42 million were proactively banned even before receiving any user reports from the country, added the report.
The report suggests that during April, WhatsApp, a messaging platform with a user base exceeding 500 million in India, recorded a significant number of over 7.4 million banned accounts due to their problematic nature. In May, the platform received 3,912 reports related to grievances, including “ban appeals,” and out of those, 297 cases were addressed and appropriate action was taken.
Reportedly, the term “Accounts Actioned” refers to the prompted WhatsApp to take appropriate measures, either by banning an account or restoring a previously banned account. In other words, it signifies instances where remedial action was taken based on the received reports.
According to the company, this report on user safety provides information regarding user complaints received, the corresponding action taken by WhatsApp, and the proactive measures implemented by the platform to address abuse on their platform.
Meanwhile, WhatsApp has started rolling out QR code chat transfer support for its users. The feature allows users to transfer their chats from one device to another. The new functionality will be helpful to WhatsApp customers while switching from an old to a new phone in transferring their account quickly. However, QR code chat transfer works only when both the devices run on the same operating system.
The feature was announced by Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg who took to his official Facebook account to share a video of the feature. “If you want to move your WhatsApp chats to a new phone, you can now do it more privately without your chats ever leaving your devices,” he wrote in the post.
