Filing of nominations by members is mandatory as per para 33, 34 and 61 of EPF Scheme,1952, according to the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation’s (EPFO) website. Nomination is also necessary when submitting online Death Claims (Forms 10-D, 20 and 5-IF). During the EPF member’s service time, members can file and update e-nominations any number of times.
Note that employer’s approval is not required to change nomination details, members can use Aadhaar based e-sign to file the nominations. Nomination cannot be changed after the death of the EPF member.
Nominees are important to get their share of PF accumulations/EDLI and the Pension benefits in case of any calamity i.e., after the death of Member.
Pre-requisites for EPF Nominee Update
The following are the pre-requisites that members need to have for the EPF Nominee Update –
Only Aadhaar verified UAN holders can file e-nomination)
Facility is available only from the UAN based login of the member
Availability of all these details is mandatory: (Since Aadhaar verification is a pre-condition, it means that Name, Date of Birth and Gender of the member against UAN is verified against his/ her Aadhaar).
EPF nomination rules
If the member wants to nominate a few family persons he should add them. •
In case the member is married and has spouse and children, he should add them even if he does not wish to nominate them under PF.
Spouse and children are defined as family for Pension Fund. So their names should be added in the family list.
Please keep the Aadhaar number and photo of the family member ready with you before you start filing. Only a member who is not married and is not having any of the family member as mentioned above may nominate any other person irrespective of relation for PF.
Only a member not having spouse or children can nominate a person for Pension Contribution.
In case there is no spouse and no children then only the Pension Nomination link will open and member can nominate one person.
How to file e-Nomination Online
Step 1: Member’s mobile number should be linked with his Aadhaar.
Step 2: Login https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/ and enter your UAN (Universal Account Number) and password to login.
Step 3: Click on “View” tab and then click on “Profile” option to upload your profile photo
Step 4: Then go to click on “Manage” tab and then click on “E-nomination” option
Step 5: Details like UAN, Name, Date of birth, Gender, Father’s/Husband’s Name, Marital Status, Permanent/ Current Address, Date of Joining in EPF and Date of Joining in EPS appear on the screen. On verification of the said details, click “Proceed” option.
Step 6: click on “yes” to update family declaration. Members can nominate more than one nominee and also distribute the amount in (%) percentage.
Step 7: Go to “add family details” and add the details of people you want to nominate.
Step 8: Go to “nomination details” and declare the total amount of share in percentage (%) among your nominees.
Step 9: Click on “save EPF nomination” box
Step 10: Now, click on e-sign button and enter your Virtual id number (VID) of Aadhaar to generate OTP, which will be sent to the registered mobile number, which is linked to your Aadhaar card.
Step 11: .The Aadhaar e-sign facility helps in approving the e-nomination form. Enter the OTP (one-time password).
The e-nomination is then registered with the EPFO. After completing the online nomination, there is no need to provide any physical documents to the employer or ex-employer.
