Google is refreshing the Android logo with playful 3D elements that “better represent” its community. In the world of AI, the iconic Android bug, also known as ‘Bugdroid,’ now appears with “more dimension and a lot more character.” It retains the distinct green colour, though there are some new avatars in different colours and textures. Google has also updated the Android text, with the letter “A” in “Android” appearing in uppercase. Google stated in a blog post that the updated logo and 3D Bugdroid will start appearing on Android devices and in more places starting this year.
In the post, Google adds, “Each time we overhaul our branding, we evaluate not only changing needs but also future goals. We know people today want more choice and autonomy, and we want our brand to be reflective of Android: something that gives people the freedom to create on their terms. As an open platform, it’s important that both our technology and brand are an invitation for people to create, connect and do more with Google on Android devices.”

In recent years, Google has been taking significant steps to maintain a modern and relevant image as more users, both young and old, join its Android ecosystem. In 2019, the company updated the Android and Bugdroid logos to be more “accessible and user-friendly.” It also introduced a new naming scheme for different Android generations. Internally, Google still uses dessert names for Android versions, while globally, it follows a straightforward numbering system, with the latest release being Android 14.
Google adds, “We hope these small but significant updates to the Android typeface will better communicate the relationship between Android devices and the Google apps and services people already know.”
Speaking on Android 14, the new OS will likely start rolling out in October. Google will also unveil its new Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 smartphones on October 4. Google is also trying its best to ensure that Android developers use its Material You design to appear similar across different Android-powered smartphones. It also helps Android stay uniform across devices, similar to iOS on iPhones.
The Android 14 will also bring new features, including an Assistant At a Glance widget to get the latest updates right on the home screen. With Google Wallet Pass photo import, users can digitise passes that have a barcode or a QR code, like gym or library cards.
