Aadhaar is a unique 12-digit identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to residents of India. It’s more than just a number; it’s linked to an individual’s demographic and biometric information, including name, address, photograph, fingerprints and iris scans. Aadhaar serves as a valid proof of identity and address across the country, simplifying processes like opening bank accounts, applying for government schemes and filing taxes.
Aadhaar also has a special provision and enrolment process for children under 5 years of age. While there is no separate “type” of Aadhaar, the special provision for children acknowledges their identity and aims to facilitate inclusion in government schemes and services from a young age.
In 2018, the UIDAI unveiled the ‘Baal Aadhaar’ card designed specifically for children under the age of five. Distinguished by its blue colour, unlike the standard white Aadhaar card issued to adults. This card also features a 12-digit unique identification number assigned by UIDAI to children below the age of five.
There are no different types of Aadhaar in terms of functionality based on age. However, the presentation and enrollment process differ slightly for adults and children below 5 years old.
Aadhaar for Children (0-5):
According to UIDAI, for children below 5 years, no biometrics will be captured. Their UID is processed based on demographic information and facial photographs linked with the UID of their parents. These children will need to update their biometrics of ten fingers, iris and facial photograph when they turn 5 and 15. Intimation to this effect will be mentioned in the original Aadhaar letter.
